Manchester United under Erik ten Hag look like a completely rejuvenated side this season – but not away from home.

The marvellous Dutchman has reinstated a style of play that has resonated with fans. He’s brought in some serious talent in Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen, alongside getting the best out of the existing bunch such as Marcus Rashford and Raphael Varane.

However, things haven’t always gone according to plan. Recently the Red Devils’ away form has been nothing short of subpar. They’ve struggled in massive clashes with Newcastle United, Liverpool and Arsenal, which realistically are the games you need to be competing in if you do want any chance of domestic glory.

With this, let’s take a look at Manchester United’s away record versus the top-half sides during the 2022/23 season.

Here is how the Red Devils have faired against the top-half sides whilst on the road this season.

Only when you see this accumulatively, it makes you realise just how bad this form actually is.

With a whopping 26 goals conceded and six losses in as little as seven games, it’s borderline remarkable the position Erik ten Hag finds himself in the table.

Some of these games have been particularly humiliating. The drubbing at Anfield and the derby annihilation were two of the worst performances of the season.

Two difficult fixtures in Brighton and Spurs also remain, so we’ll see if it looks any better on paper when the season eventually concludes.

The club is undeniably going in the right direction. However, when you consider that the teams listed will be our closest competitors when challenging for the league title, and or Champions League spots – it simply has to get better.

Thankfully, Old Trafford has been somewhat of a fortress this season, meaning the shoddy away form hasn’t reflected in the league standings. Ten Hag will no doubt be aware of this, and we have every bit of faith that with his high standards, he’ll be trying to iron out the losses when they haven’t got the home faithful behind them.
