Manchester United star makes rare move to call for new signings in January window

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has urged the club to use the January transfer window as an opportunity for improvement.

Erik ten Hag has received criticism for how he has spent the £400 million he has been given since moving to Manchester United in the summer of 2022.

Antony, Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro have been United’s biggest expenditure in the two summers that the Dutchman has been in charge at Old Trafford.

There is an argument to be made that perhaps only one of these three signings has been successful for the Red Devils with Hojlund netting 5 Champions League goals in six group stage games.

Evans on January opportunity

Whether more money needs to be spent on transfers in January is a big question that fans will be asking, but if the money that has been spent at Old Trafford continues to be a waste, surely the club may rein in the funding.

Well, speaking to Norwegian outlet FotbolSkanalen, United defender Jonny Evans believes the window is one of opportunity that the Red Devils have to exploit.

“He (Ten Hag) is a fantastic coach and I have no doubts about him. In January we get a new window and a chance to improve the team,” Evans explained.

“Not playing in Europe will give him more time. We’ve had a tough period but hopefully, we’ll get players back from injuries and get more consistency in the team. It would be good for him [Ten Hag].”

United’s January chance

Barring Bruno Fernandes, who might go down as one of the club’s best signings post-Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the Red Devils aren’t usually active in the winter market.

Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst were both brought in on loan as the club’s injury struggles worsened and you wouldn’t bet against two players, with a similar calibre, being brought into the club in January.

Whether these players would be good enough for the here and now remains to be seen but it does look like United will be active.

A new defender and, potentially, a new centre-forward would surely be targeted.

It is a rare move for a player to publicly call for the squad to strengthen, but Jonny Evans has been around the block and knows what is required, and will be well aware that this current team need help.
