Manchester United’s players came under huge pressure last season with the team’s Premier League performances below standard.
There was not a Manchester United player who escaped criticism last season with the team going from a third place finish in 2022/23 to eighth place in 2023/24.
Expectedly, a lot of the criticism came crashing down on club captain Bruno Fernandes, in his first proper year as skipper. He had worn the armband regularly the year prior, though, with Harry Maguire injured or benched regularly.
Bruno Fernandes shook off the criticism, going on to provide the match-winning assist in the FA Cup Final for Kobbie Mainoo’s goal. Legendary captain Roy Keane admitted he been won over by Bruno Fernandes, following past criticism.

Bruno Fernandes impressed Joe Lewis
Former Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis spent months training as a free agent at Carrington last season.
For the first time, he has spoken about his time working behind the scenes at United, telling the Press and Journal how he was invited into the club as a contact of Tom Heaton, with the club needing an extra goalkeeper in training sessions with Radek Vitek being sent out on loan in January.
Lewis explained how there was one player who stood out behind the scenes, club captain Bruno Fernandes.
He said: “He’s been their stand-out player, in my opinion, for a little while now, but it’s not just his quality… it’s his attitude, his work ethic around the training ground – you can see why he’s captain.
“Sometimes that doesn’t always come across on the pitch on a matchday. But around the training ground, he’s a great guy, a real leader and his quality is unbelievable.
“Some of the stuff he would do in training, and just the way he strikes a football, is incredible.”
Bruno Fernandes’ Euro 2024 is over
Bruno Fernandes is now on a break after Portugal were eliminated from Euro 2024 in a penalty shootout against France.
Fernandes was substituted during the game, with Manchester United fans pointing out Portugal’s clear mistake in doing so.
It was a bizarre tournament for Portugal, hamstring by Cristiano Ronaldo, who showed Erik ten Hag was right to ditch him in 2023.
What this means is that Fernandes and clubmate Diogo Dalot can rest up, and while they will miss United’s pre-season games against Rosenborg and Rangers, they will be ready for the USA tour.
