With Manchester United sitting 14th in the Premier League after a turbulent campaign, several personnel at the club face uncertain futures.
Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as Manchester United head coach midway through the season, with Ineos hoping it would help improve the team after a dire start to the 2024/25 campaign.
United’s results in domestic competitions didn’t pick up, but they remain unbeaten in the Europa League, ahead of a quarter-final second-leg tie against Lyon on Thursday night. It feels like the team’s season is hanging by a thread going into the game given the abysmal results suffered in the Premier League.
While Amorim has failed to have an immediate impact upon arriving at Old Trafford from Sporting CP, where he built an exciting side that enjoyed league success, there is a feeling that he knows exactly what is needed to restore United to its former glories.

Manchester United convinced Ruben Amorim is among the best coaches
Ineos may be planning a squad overhaul in the summer, with up to 10 players departing, but they are not planning to change the manager again.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has not been afraid to make changes since becoming co-owner at United and that is likely to remain the case this summer when the transfer window reopens.
However, after sacking Ten Hag in October, Ineos won’t need to worry about paying another compensation package to another departing United manager despite poor results on the pitch.
Now, United in Focus understands, after speaking with Graeme Bailey, that United are making it clear they are backing Amorim with their long-term project.
“United are firmly behind Amoirm, they appreciate that he inherited a situation that is ‘shocking’. We understand that Amorim ideally would have preferred to wait until the end of the season but United pushed it mid-season, Amorim warned about the difficulties of such a move.
“But United are backing him – nobody at the club is happy, but they think they have one of Europe’s best head coaches and most people in football do.”
Francisco Trincao sends transfer warning to Man Utd
United have been linked with an array of Sporting CP players since Amorim’s arrival in November.
However, it’s unrealistic and perhaps unfair to expect Amorim to completely strip his former squad without considering if the players are suited to the Premier League or the demands that come with representing the biggest clubs in the world.
One potential target is Sporting CP and Portugal winger Francisco Trincao, who could form a reunion with Amorim this summer.
Portugal star and United legend Cristiano Ronaldo has already encouraged Trincao to make the move to Old Trafford.

United in Focus understands Trincao issued a transfer warning to United because he wanted assurances that he wouldn’t be joining a club that could switch managers six months into his contract.
Trincao’s warning is significant because the response strengthens the understanding that United are backing Amorim.
Bailey added: “Also backing up this stance am told a number of transfer targets are saying to United – Trincao one of them – that if they come to United, they don’t want to be playing for someone else in the next six months.
“As it stands United are insisting that will not be the case – everyone is onboard with Amorim for the long-term.”
There’s arguably nothing worse for a new signing when the head coach who signed them leaves the club shortly after their arrival, as was the case with Joshua Zirkzee when Ten Hag was sent his marching orders in October.
United have a crucial game in the Europa League this week against Lyon when they will be looking to secure a place in the semi-finals. Amorim needs a big European night to remember and now is the time to get that.
