Manchester United set to miss out on free agent winger Malcolm Ebiowei to Palace
Manchester United will miss out on young winger Malcolm Ebiowei to Crystal Palace.
The Mail reported three weeks ago that United were keen on the 18-year-old, whose contract at Derby County is set to expire at the end of June.
Fabrizio Romano reports it is a ‘done deal’ that Ebiowei will sign for Crystal Palace.
Malcolm Ebiowei to Palace
Ebiowei would have been signed as a developmental prospect for Manchester United, and could even have been sent back out on loan to Derby, where he made his debut under Wayne Rooney last season.
But this is Palace’s decision to make now, with the youngster preferring a move to the Eagles.
It is not a bad choice for his sake. He stands a better chance of breaking into Palace’s side than he would with Manchester United.
Ebiowei plays on the right wing, and would have joined Amad and Facundo Pellistri as possible options for the position, none of who are quite ready to play regularly.
From this perspective, it’s no great loss for United to miss out, as there are already options there, but Ebiowei could still go onto become a player the Red Devils regret failing to land.
Palace have got a bargain, a player who scored his first Championship goal in May, and is highly rated by Wayne Rooney.
Rooney told the Derbyshire Telegraph: “First of all, his attitude is very good. He has got an enormous amount of ability, he is brave, he will take the ball, he is not afraid to take players on, to get tackled, to make mistakes. So he has got a really bright future.”
Manchester United have not made a single signing yet this summer, and any frustration among fans over the miss on Ebiowei is more reflective of an overall failure to land targets, rather than being especially put out over the teenager signing for Palace.
