Manchester United overlooked potential move to appoint Massimiliano Allegri for one key reason

Manchester United have picked out Ruben Amorim as the top target to replace Erik ten Hag but have also considered other managers.

Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s time in the Old Trafford dugout.

Ineos backed Ten Hag over the summer but clearly feel that results and performances simply haven’t been good enough.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been placed in caretaker charge and will lead United out against Leicester City on Wednesday night.

United already appear to have picked out Ten Hag’s replacement though with Ruben Amorim wanted.

Sporting have already confirmed United’s move for Amorim but the Portuguese coach has not yet finalised his move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United stance on Massimiliano Allegri

United have been linked with plenty of other managers since sacking Ten Hag.

Brentford’s Thomas Frank was a target for United whilst former Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic was contacted about the United job.

Another name in the mix last week was Massimiliano Allegri, who left Juventus at the end of last season.

Reports suggested that Allegri was interested in the United job and believed that the number of former Serie A players in the United squad suited him.

The Athletic now claim that United did look into a move for Allegri.

However, the verdict was that Allegri would be less likely to build for a length future at the club than top target Amorim.

Amorim isn’t even 40 yet and United seemingly believe that he can made a big impact for a long time whereas Allegri may be more of a quick fix.

Massimiliano Allegri record at Juventus

Allegri is certainly one of the bigger names to be linked with the United job.

The Italian carved out a strong reputation for himself at AC Milan but became one of the top tacticians of the 2010’s with Juventus.

After joining Juventus in 2014, Allegri won five league titles in a row and only once dropped below 90 points.

Allegri guided Juventus to the Champions League final on two occasions, but lost out to Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The 57-year-old took a break from the game in 2019 but was back at Juve just two years later, attempting to lead the club back to glory after the Andrea Pirlo era.

Allegri’s second stint in Turin didn’t quite go to plan though and even included a seventh-place finish in the 2022-23 season.

After leaving Juve towards the end of last season, Allegri departed with his return unable to bring back previous success.

United may well have concerns abut Allegri’s second spell at Juve and few will be wishing that he was heading for Old Trafford over Amorim.
