Manchester United must target Ibrahim Sangare with Tchouameni move now looking impossible
Manchester United desperately need to sign a defensive midfielder, and several doors already appear to be closing.
Aurelien Tchouameni appears poised to sign for Real Madrid, with ESPN reporting a deal close to £70 million is in its final stages.
Free agent option Boubacar Kamara has signed with Aston Villa, while The Telegraph report Wolves have made a move to sign Joao Palhinha. Kalvin Phillips is tipped to sign for City, rather than United, by The Mail.
There is another potentially top option for the Red Devils. Manchester United must target Ibrahim Sangare.
United must target Ibrahim Sangare
Sangare plays for PSV Eindhoven and so is a player Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag knows well, with the Dutch side pushing Ajax all the way in the race for the title.
Opta named Sangare in their Eredivisie team of the season, labelling him the ‘best defensive midfielder’ in the league.
Sangare ranked 1st in the league for tackles won, 1st for duels won, 2nd for ball recoveries, and 3rd for interceptions.
Still only 24, Sangare has great ability and potential to get better, and PSV face a real battle to keep hold of him this summer.
Journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport at the end of last month that Sangare was player who United were ‘looking at’.
United may need to step that interest up, with The Mirror reporting he is on Chelsea’s list of targets, with PSV valuing him at around £30 million. Voetbal International also claim Liverpool are monitoring him.
A problem is United’s lack of Champions League football, and this is where Ten Hag could prove advantageous, with Sangare familiar with how good he is as a manager, by regularly going up against his teams.
PSV signed Sangare from Toulouse for £8.2 million in 2020. £30 million would see them make a good profit, and it would also be a very shrewd price for United, leaving plenty of funds left to sign other players.
Former PSV midfielder Aad de Mos told Voetbal4U earlier this season ahead of a Europa Conference League match beteeen the two sides: “Ibrahim Sangare is better on one leg than Leicester’s midfield. This season, he is the king of PSV.”
Wore a United shirt in 2021
There may be another edge Manchester United have if the club enter the race to sign Sangare; he already seems to admire the Red Devils.
Sangare was pictured at a charity tournament in the Ivory Coast last summer, organised by Eric Bailly, wearing a Manchester United kit.
This certainly can’t hurt United’s chances, with Sangare also known to Amad as well as Bailly, who also attended the tournament.
Sangare would make Manchester United more competitive in midfield and tougher to beat. He would add a combination of tenacity, physicality and discipline, to a team which lost almost every midfield battle played in 2021/22.
Fixing this area has to be a priority for United, and Sangare could be an ideal complement for Frenkie de Jong, if signed too.
The Mirror linked Ngolo Kante with a surprise switch, and while the Frenchman would improve United’s current options, Sangare is much more of a longer term solution.
