Manchester United have been more ruthless than usual in this transfer window and that is reflected in the number of loans this summer.
Just three players on loan so far shows United are moving towards cutting the cord entirely while keeping sell-on/buy-back clauses instead of letting the players’ value decline due to a bad loan.
That seems to be what’s happening with Joe Hugill, who was one of the three sent on loan, alongside Radek Vitek and Tom Wooster.
Hugill signed a new contract United, till 2026, to go on a season-long loan with Wigan Athletic, where he scored on his friendly debut.
That remains the peak of this loan spell so far as he recently played his third competitive game for the Latics but has yet to open his account.

Joe Hugill’s wait continues
Hugill got his fourth consecutive start at Wigan and third consecutive in the league, this time in a 1-0 win vs Crawley Town.
Despite the victory, Hugill couldn’t end his goalscoring rut as he was subbed off after 77 minutes this time after failing to make an impact.
He had zero shots in those 77 minutes, managing to complete just six passes out of 11 attempted in another forgettable outing in League One.
In a repeat of the game vs Reading, he was left up front to contest for duels and didn’t come out on the winning side for many.
He won just four out of 12 duels, with his aerial record particularly bad, as he won just one out of seven in the air.
Hugill has a great goalscoring record for the United U21 and U18 sides but his game hasn’t consistently translated well to senior football, where his physical gifts get nullified.
That is what the loan spell in physical League One is for and the hope will be that these are growing pains Hugill comes through to return as a much-improved player.
Loan expectations from Hugill
Having scored in the pre-season for United, the expectations from Hugill for his spell at Wigan would have been for him to score at least 15 goals in the league, maybe 20 in all competitions.
At 20, he should really start being impactful in senior football and this is not even his first senior football loan spell, having spent time at Burton just last season.

However, after four games, there might be a need to reset expectations, as his game has looked slightly outmatched vs professionals.
United would be happy if he reaches double figures in the league and 15 or so across all competitions but that return is unlikely to get him a first-team berth at Old Trafford next year.
The best-case scenario right now looks like he impresses enough at Wigan to garner interest from Championship sides, where United can sell him for a fee plus a sell-on clause.
Of course, goals might come in bundles and Hugill might outperform expectations eventually in what would be the dream scenario for both the club and the player.
But nothing he has shown so far suggests that could be the case.
