Manchester United loanee Alvaro Fernandez has suffered an injury setback says Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe.

The talented 19-year-old left-back picked up an injury on his first start for the Lilywhites which came in the 4-1 win at Huddersfield Town in the League Cup first round.

The Spain Under-19 international picked up two assists on his first senior start before being replaced at half-time in the clash at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Having come off the bench in Preston’s first two Championship games of the season, the former Real Madrid youngster has missed the last two matches.

Speaking ahead of Preston’s clash against Watford at Deepdale on Saturday, Lowe gave an update on Fernandez’s fitness.

Lowe said: “He’s hurt his ankle, he’s had a little bit of a setback so it will probably be next week sometime [when he returns].

“We’re governed by Manchester United as well, he will be there tomorrow to see their physios then he will be back with us.

“He’s ruled out for Saturday but hopefully he will be back in contention for Tuesday, if not the following Saturday.”

With Fernandez ruled out of the clash against the Hornets, it means the attack-minded Spaniard won’t be able to come up against one of the best players in the Championship who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford – Ismaila Sarr.

According to 90min, the 24-year-old is back on Manchester United’s radar and the Mail recently reported that the Red Devils’ technical director Darren Fletcher gazed over the African Cup of Nations winner during Watford’s trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Sarr scored from inside his own half in that game but also missed a penalty later on in the game.
