Alvaro Fernandez‘s first start at Preston North End was an eye catching one, before it was cut short by injury.

The Manchester United wonderkid started for Preston in place of Robbie Brady in the Carabao Cup tie away at Championship competitors Huddersfield Town.

Fernandez provided two assists from almost identical situations with teammate Ali McCann scoring both in a 4-1 win.

Prior to this Fernandez had played twice as a substitute. This productive showing against Championship opposition was an encouraging sign.

Alvaro Fernandez provides two assists

Fernandez provided nine assists and scored four goals at youth level last season. Preston’s wing-back system plays to his strengths.

The former Real Madrid youth prospect, 19, is at an age where he needs to play regular first team football and was unlucky not to be promoted to Manchester United’s first team.

This loan is still an important step for him, and the early signs look good. Two assists on his first ever competitive start is a great sign.

However, his progress was halted by injury. Fernandez was substituted at half-time through injury, which was just a precaution.

Manager Ryan Lowe told club media: “He’s fine. He just rolled his ankle and it was more of a precaution taking him off, it might be a bit stiff tomorrow but he will be fine Thursday, Friday.”

The youngster’s performance was a clinical one, and adds to his strong showings as a substitute in the Championship so far.

Fernandez had a solid as a substitute in Preston’s 0-0 draw with Hull City, making 28 touches in 24 minutes, completing 17 of 18 passes. But there was no assist that day.

This display was a great way to introduce himself properly to Preston supporters. After a dazzling 45 minutes, it’s safe to say they were left wanting more.
