Manchester United linked with move for Giorgi Mamardashvili

Manchester United are being linked with a move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, report AS.

Mamardashvili, 21, made 23 appearances for Valencia this season, conceding only 24 goals, keeping 10 clean sheets.

AS report Manchester United have called to enquire over the goalkeeper, who has a release clause of just 20 million Euros, £17 million.

Valencia are currently hoping to extend his contract, and would look to increase his release clause.

What you need to know: Giorgi Mamardashvili

Valencia signed Mamardashvili from Dinamo Tbilisi in 2021, paying just £700,000 for his services. The goalkeeper is a now a Georgia international with two caps so far.

Only 21, Mamardashvili is making a name for himself in La Liga, where he stands at 6ft 5″, as an intimidating presence for attackers.

Under contract until 2024, Valencia still wish to extend his deal, but they are aware they would still make a tidy profit even if he leaves under his current release clause.

United’s interest is only tentative at this early stage, but he is an interesting option. Mamardashvili would become the first ever Georgian player to feature for Manchester United.

He ranks 8th in La Liga for the percentage of crosses stopped entering the penalty area, per FBRef, while David de Gea ranks 21st in the Premier League in this category.

United goalkeeping situation could see changes

There is plenty of uncertainty over the situation of Manchester United’s goalkeeping department, with Dean Henderson tipped to move on.

The MEN reported last week Henderson is expected to move to Newcastle, although it is unclear if this would be a loan or permanent move.

A switch for young prospect Mamardashvili would be interesting, providing cover, and a competitor for David de Gea.

De Gea has been dropped by Spain for their last two international squads, with Luis Enrique taking the view he is not enough of a well rounded goalkeeper, and Erik ten Hag could view it the same way.

A move for Mamardashvili would not be costly, and would not interfere with the rest of United’s transfer business, although, there is arguably a stronger chance that he simply ends up renewing his deal with Valencia. United will have to be quick, before his release clause rises.
