Manchester United linked striker says Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest of all time

Mathys Tel has labelled Cristiano Ronaldo the ‘Greatest of all Time’ amid reports suggesting that the Bayern Munich starlet could follow in his Manchester United footsteps.

With the 2024 January window potentially – hopefully – Manchester United’s final one under the control of the dreaded Glazer family, it’s fitting that it was littered with reports linking Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting with a move to Old Trafford.

Another 30-something centre-forward, parachuted in mid-season for a club once again pursuing short-term solutions to a long-term problem.

Now, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s takeover finally complete, with Ineos seizing control of all sporting matters, and with United now being linked with Choupo-Moting’s Bayern Munich team-mate, the difference in atmosphere and ambition could hardly be more different.

Manchester United keen on Mathys Tel

If 34-year-old Choupo-Moting was another sticking-plaster signing typical of the Glazer era – see Wout Weghorst and Odion Ighalo – then 18-year-old Mathys Tel, should he arrive at Old Trafford in the summer, could become a fitting posterboy of the bold new Ineos regime.

The teenager, who joined Bayern from Rennes for nearly £20 million when still only 17, is one of a number of rising stars linked with United. The likes of Michael Olise and Jarrad Branthwaite reportedly have their admirers too, while incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth is a big admirer of the 23-year-old England international Marc Guehi.

Man United, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports, have ‘intensively analysed’ Tel in recent weeks. The Red Devils have also now contacted his camp regarding a potential move in the off-season.

Tel, who has been likened to Kylian Mbappe due to his French passport, his searing pace, and his penchant for cutting inside from the left, would potentially be a signing in the mould of Cristiano Ronaldo, who also arrived as a precocious teenager with his best years ahead of him.

Tel, speaking to Goal on TikTok, wasted no time in saying Ronaldo’s name when asked who he considers to be football’s ‘GOAT’. Or, the ‘Greatest of all Time’, to those of us slightly less social media literate.

Bayern Munited starlet is a big Cristiano Ronaldo fan

The France Under-21 international, despite his obvious potential, has not started a single Bundesliga game all season for an embattled Bayern Munich. Something which must change if Tel is to commit his long-term future to the Bavarian giants.

“(If he doesn’t feature more regularly), we have to consider all options,” Tel’s agent told Bild a few days ago. “Because Mathys knows that he is valuable and will be a top player.”
