Manchester United are short of full-backs right now due to an injury crisis, which has made this a difficult start to the season for the club.
A recent report from Football Transfers claimed Manchester United are eyeing a January swoop for out of favour Paris Saint-Germain full-back Nordi Mukiele.
One player who almost certainly won’t be joining is long-linked Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries.
The 2022 World Cup star has been regularly linked with a move to United over the past two years. Gazzetta dello Sport reported interest from the Red Devils back in March.
Calciomercato had reported Dumfries was keen on a summer move to the Premier League, even switching agents, but he remained at Inter Milan, with United choosing not to sign a right-back.
Dumfries set for new deal
Denzel Dumfries now looks set to close the door on a future switch to Old Trafford and sign a new long-term contract at Inter Milan.
Dutch newspaper AD reports that while nothing has been agreed yet, player and club are closing in on a contract extension.
It is claimed Dumfries will more than double his salary, which will be extended to run to 2029, with their headline reporting he is ‘on his way to a dream contract’.
The report states: “Sources from Italy assure that Internazionale hopes to complete the top deal this calendar year and thus keep Dumfries out of the hands of other European giants.
“They not only know that his current contract expires in a year and a half, but they also see the tireless wing defender in the best phase of his career.”
Dumfries has three goals and two assists for Inter Milan so far this season.
Manchester United hope full-back issues will clear up
Manchester United are hoping that the ongoing injuries at full-back will clear up in the coming weeks and months.
There are bigger options long-term at centre-back, where there is an ageing group of defenders which need to be moved on and replaced with younger prospects.
If there is a possibility to sign a player who can play at both full-back and centre-back, it may be one United look more favourably towards.
