Andre Onana had two turbulent seasons at Manchester United, but his reputation remains intact in Africa as a top goalkeeper.
One of the big changes Ruben Amorim made at the start of the 2025/26 season was changing his first-choice goalkeeper.
Altay Bayindir started the first few Premier League matches, with Andre Onana limited to one appearance in United’s embarrassing defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round.
Then, Senne Lammens signed from Royal Antwerp for an initial fee of £18.2 million. The 23-year-old has since become Amorim’s first-choice goalkeeper after impressive performances against Sunderland and Liverpool.
Onana joined Trabzonspor on loan at the end of the summer transfer window, and he remains a key player in the Cameroon national team.

Andre Onana nominated for CAF Goalkeeper of the Year 2025
Onana is trying to resurrect his career after a difficult spell at United.
The United loanee is under contract at Old Trafford until 2027, but he is likely to be sold in the summer if there is enough interest in his signature.
Trabzonspor are undecided about signing Onana permanently, but it’s still early days in his temporary spell in Turkey.
The nominees for the CAF Awards 2025 have been released, with Onana part of a 10-man shortlist for the 2025 African Goalkeeper of the Year Award.
However, there was no place for fellow United stars Amad Diallo or Bryan Mbeumo in the Men’s African Player of the Year award.
African Goalkeeper of the Year nominees:
- Yassine Bounou (Al Hilal & Morocco)
- Aymen Dahmen (CS Sfaxien & Tunisia)
- Marc Diouf (TP Mazembe & Senegal)
- Edouard Mendy (Al-Ahli & Senegal)
- Munir Mohamedi (RS Berkane & Morocco)
- Stanley Nwabali (Chippa Utd & Nigeria)
- Andre Onana (Manchester United/Trabzonspor & Cameroon)
- Ahmed El Shenawy (Pyramids & Egypt)
- Vozinha (Chaves & Cape Verde)
- Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns & South Africa)
Trabzonspor enjoy strong start to the season
Onana has joined a Trabzonspor side that has thrived in the first 9 games of the Super Lig second.
Trabzonspor are currently in second place behind Galatasaray, who they will face next week.
Onana’s next fixture is against 14th-place Eyüpspor on Saturday.
A good season for Onana will help him secure a move away from United in the summer, whether that means moving to Turkey permanently or elsewhere.
