Trabzonspor stance on keeping Andre Onana after impressive start, Man Utd have moved on

Andre Onana could find himself at the centre of a transfer hunt in 2026, with the Cameroon goalkeeper unlikely to play for Manchester United again.

Manchester United made big changes to the goalkeeper department in the summer.

Perhaps the biggest decision was to remove Andre Onana from his duties as first-choice goalkeeper. Ruben Amorim limited the Cameroon international to just one appearance as United crashed out of the Carabao Cup, losing on penalties against Grimsby Town.

With Altay Bayindir preferred for Premier League matches at the start of the season, Onana joined Trabzonspor on loan to ensure he would get regular football ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Cameroon has yet to book their place in next year’s tournament after missing out on an automatic qualification spot.

To cast Onana’s future in greater doubt, Senne Lammens joined from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day. The 23-year-old stopper made his debut in United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland before the October international break.

Onana will be trying to get back to his best on the pitch to make sure there are plenty of clubs seeking his services next summer.

Trabzonspor yet to decide on Andre Onana deal

Contrary to reports elsewhere, Trabzonspor have yet to decide whether they want to sign Onana on a permanent deal when his loan expires at the end of the season.

The United loanee has impressed in his first four games, keeping two clean sheets so far.

According to The Sun, Trabzonspor head coach Fatih Tekke has been impressed by Onana’s leadership qualities as well as his goalkeeping ability.

Onana’s current loan deal at Trabzonspor does not include an option or obligation to buy.

Following a conversation with transfer expert Graeme Bailey, United In Focus understands that Trabzonspor haven’t made a decision on Onana, but they may approach United with new terms in January if it means fighting off interest from elsewhere.

“He is doing well, Trabzonspor have not made a decision yet – far too early they say, but they would look at keeping him if a deal could be done in January.”

Trabzonspor are fully aware that if Onana continues to play at a high level, other clubs may start to look, which explains why they may want to get a deal done early.

United want Onana gone, off the wage bill, and there will be an attempt made by Ineos to get as much money back.

United In Focus also understands that United are planning on bringing in another keeper and the last thing they want or need is for Onana to be back in the mix.

When is Andre Onana next in action?

After playing twice for Cameroon during the October international break, Onana will return to action for Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig.

Onana will be in the Trabzonspor line-up when they take on Rizespor on Saturday at 3pm.

Trabzonspor will be favourites for the game as they sit in second place behind Galatasaray.

The United goalkeeper will be seeking his third clean sheet of the season.
