Manchester United have accepted 40-year-old was hired with the wrong job title

Manchester United are moving forward with a more professional approach under the guidance of new investment.

Ineos are leading major structural changes at Manchester United, the sort of ‘open heart surgery’ Ralf Rangnick talked about.

The Glazers did a totally inadequate job of addressing senior football positions behind the scenes, only appointing a trumped-up football director and technical director in 2021.

Now with Ineos leading a review and bringing in their own men, the future looks bleak for John Murtough. There are also questions over Darren Fletcher too.

Manchester United ready to make Darren Fletcher change

Manchester United hired Darren Fletcher with the grand title of ‘technical director’ in 2021. He had never worked in this role for a club before.

The former Red Devils midfielder’s future at Old Trafford is unclear amid Ineos’ overhaul.

But according to The Telegraph, there is an acceptance at Manchester United that Fletcher’s job title is wrong.

The newspaper reports: “There is thought to be a willingness to keep Darren Fletcher at the club but recognition from all sides that his current title of technical director is misleading and does not reflect his role as a coach and academy first team liaison.”

Fletcher is frequently seen at Carrington around training sessions, and while he may provide a valuable role, his actual job title is incorrect.

Manchester United are looking at a restructure

There are a number of new faces reported to be incoming at Manchester United, led by Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth.

United are also looking to bring on board Jason Wilcox from Southampton, The Athletic report, with The Guardian reporting Dougie Freedman is wanted as head of recruitment.

There just isn’t space for Fletcher in a senior ‘technical director’ role, and if he wants to stay at the club, his role will be refined to more accurately reflect a role he can fulfil.
