Manchester United’s defensive strength was key to the Carabao Cup victory a week ago. This time the same starting XI conceded seven goals against Liverpool.

The 7-0 defeat was an absolute pasting, a real embarrassment. It will be advisable to stay away from Liverpool supporters over the next week if you can help it, probably longer.

As far as Manchester United’s season goes, this is a momentum killer. A defeat was always due at some point, but not like this.

United are still third in the Premier League table, seven points ahead of Liverpool. A top four place is still well within our grasp. This result is only totally disastrous if it leads to a collapse.

Manchester United’s goal difference compared

This defeat can be chalked up as just three points lost. But it could be more damaging if goal difference ends up as a factor in the race for the top four.

It was the third heavy defeat United have suffered this season, losing 7-0 to Liverpool in addition to 4-0 at Brentford and 6-3 at City.

The victories have not been big enough to totally redress these. The biggest margin of victory has been 3-0 wins over Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Leicester.

This took a hit, having been +13 heading into the game. Liverpool’s has swung from +12 to +19.

City have the best goal difference this season with +41, with table toppers Arsenal on +34.

Manchester United are a long way off, and this isn’t surprising, considering only one player has scored into double figures in all competitions this season, let alone just the league.

This ranks below Brighton (+14) and Brentford (+7).

Crucially it is below top four rivals Liverpool, Newcastle (+19) and Tottenham (+10).

There are 13 games remaining for United to get back on track. The next is against relegation threatened side Southampton, who have the 18th best goal difference on -21.
