Manchester United fans react to Marcel Sabitzer performance for Dortmund v Newcastle

Former Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer led Borussia Dortmund to a win away at Newcastle last night.

Last season saw Manchester United really struggle away from home. And among the many disappointing losses, the game away at Newcastle was one which stood out, with Erik ten Hag’s side well beaten.

Marcel Sabitzer played 90 minutes in that game. Last night he had a happier trip to St James Park with Borussia Dortmund.

Sabitzer featured for the entire game as Dortmund beat Newcastle 1-0, a crucial victory in their Champions League group, which also includes PSG and AC Milan.

Manchester United fans react to Marcel Sabitzer performance

Manchester United fans were split over seeing Marcel Sabitzer play a prominent role for Dortmund.

Why was he so effective for Dortmund, yet last season at St James Park for Manchester United, he struggled?

Manchester United fans were debating this on social media last night after Dortmund’s win.

One supporter wrote: “Watching Sabitzer in BVB and now i can clearly say Manchester United has a big problem.”

Another added: “Sabitzer is cooking against Newcastle LOOOL, everyone looks remarkably different outside of a United shirt.”

Further comments read: “Sabitzer deserved a permanent move, Ten Hag slipped,” and “We could’ve kept Sabitzer for less than half of what we shilled for Mount.”

One more fan asked: “Is it me or Sabitzer looks quality?”

Sabitzer created two goalscoring chances on the night for Borussia Dortmund, and worked hard defensively, making four clearances.

He won three duels, but he did only complete 19 passes, with Newcastle enjoying 60 per cent possession – yet Dortmund won the game with a first half goal from Felix Nmecha.

No guarantee Sabitzer would have solved Manchester United issues

It is true that players often look better away from Manchester United, once they have left the club.

Marcel Sabitzer signed for United on loan in January as cover for Christian Eriksen, and was only ever seen as a temporary solution.

He did have a few good moments, and some less so. In totality, he did not do enough to convince United to pay up for him, and made the move from Bayern Munich to Borussia Dortmund instead.

This season United have struggled, and while there are lots of midfield options, it remains a muddle for Erik ten Hag still looking for his best combination. Sabitzer would likely only have clouded the mix further, rather than solved it.
