Manchester United’s win against Fulham hung on a dramatic penalty incident which saw two opponents plus their manager sent off.

Star midfielder Bruno Fernandes coolly dispatched the spot-kick then scored another, while Marcel Sabitzer netted his first ever goal for the club.

And while those attacking players rightfully take the plaudits, one at the other end of the pitch deserves some extra praise.

Step forward goalkeeper David de Gea.

David de Gea saves United

David de Gea is not perfect, we have seen enough of him over the years to know this, but he is very good. On Sunday he was terrific.

De Gea is far more likely to win United a game than lose one, and against Fulham, he made a decisive impact in the club’s favour.

He made a superb diving save (above) to deny Aleksandar Mitrovic a second goal which would have extended Fulham’s lead.

De Gea’s acrobatics clawed the ball out and pushed it away from the goal, and it was not the only spectacular stop he made.

The Spaniard made five saves in total – and even completed 91 per cent of his passes. This was the type of all round performance everybody wants from a goalkeeper.

United fans hail De Gea

Manchester United supporters recognised the efforts of the 32-year-old, commenting that without his big performance, the team would have lost.
