Casey Stoney has resigned as head coach of Manchester United’s women’s team. The club announced the news in a statement.
What the statement does not share, are the reasons behind the departure.
The Mail report Stoney has ‘has been unhappy with the support structure and facilities’ at the club.
The report notes: “Players were unable to shower in between training and meals before makeshift portacabins were installed while the nearest toilets are a 10-minute walk from their training pitch. Their gym is also in a tented facility.”
Compared to investment in better facilities at other clubs including neighbours City, Stoney made the call to resign.
A pattern emerging
Just earlier today we reported on Old Trafford’s leaking roof, which showed it’s deficiencies on Tuesday evening at the United v Leicester game.
A lack of investment in club facilities from top to bottom was criticised recently by former star Gary Neville.
Speaking to Sky Sports last month, Neville said: “If you go behind the scenes you see it is [the stadium] rusty and rotting. If you look at the training ground it’s not even the top five in this country.”
In a letter to supporters, co-owner Joel Glazer pledged there would be more investment in facilities, writing: “We recognise that we will need to significantly increase investment in Old Trafford and our training complex to ensure that the club’s facilities remain among the best in Europe.”
This extends to the Women’s Team too, which was only formed in 2019.
Stoney has been manager since the start, and while a new head coach will be appointed in due course, perhaps even this week, attracted by the prestige of working with United,the problems with facilities will ensure the post is not as glamorous as it would seem from the outside.
This is Manchester United, one of the most valuable clubs in the world, which is taking a huge hit to it’s reputation when reports like this emerge.
The sad aspect is, it is not even surprising at this point, and symbolises and shames the Glazer ownership of the club.
