Manchester United’s match against Newcastle turned out to be the club’s first goalless draw under Erik ten Hag.
A lack goal threat saw United waste the few opportunities the team did create in a lacklustre 90 minutes from both teams.
Erik ten Hag was pleased with the performance if not the result, telling the club website: “We are disappointed we didn’t win as the performance was good.”
“A clean sheet, we pressed well from the front to the back and we controlled it, I think. I thought we were good on the ball in stages, especially the second half.”

Manchester United fans name Casemiro man of the match v Newcastle
Manchester United supporters were polled to choose a man of the match from the game and summer signing Casemiro won the vote.
The Brazil international was making his second Premier League start in a row after a starring role against Everton a week earlier.
Man of the match poll results v Newcastle…
- Casemiro: 23 per cent
- Antony: 20 per cent
- Cristiano Ronaldo: 12 per cent
- Lisandro Martinez: 8 per cent
- All other players six per cent or fewer
Casemiro came close to creating a winning goal at the end but Marcus Rashford was unable to convert.
The Brazil midfielder won the Premier League man of the match against Everton last week, although Ronaldo won the supporter’s vote a week ago.
Ten Hag has to decide whether to start Casemiro in midweek against Tottenham when Scott McTominay returns from suspension, or save him for the Chelsea game this coming Saturday.
