Manchester United have experienced a setback at just the wrong time. Finishing inside the top four looks a tall order.
At this stage of the Premier League season there are consequences to bad results. You can no longer confidently say ‘we’ll catch it up in the second half of the season’.
Back to back defeats to Fulham and Manchester City have opened up the gap between Manchester United and fourth place.
The gap has gone from being reduced to just five points a fortnight ago, to extended to 11 points, with Aston Villa winning on both weekends United lost.

Manchester United have failed to respond to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s call for urgency
New investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe conducted a round of media interviews a fortnight ago where he spoke about a range of topics concerning Ineos’ long-term strategy.
There was one issue Ratcliffe identified as critical – qualifying for the Champions League.
This can have a major bearing on what Manchester United will be able to do in the summer window, or at least, how the club approach it.
Ratcliffe told BBC Sport: “We have a short term issue, which is we really, really want to get into the Champions League next year.
“It is quite important for FFP (Financial Fair Play).”
Following Ratcliffe’s comments, Manchester United have slumped to back to back Premier League defeats.
If the City one was predictable, the defeat at home to Fulham was not. Marco Silva’s side had won just one league match in 2024 beforehand.
Sir Dave Brailsford was at The Etihad to observe United’s latest defeat. He will have had a lot to report back on.
Ratcliffe won’t be impressed
Finishing inside the top four, or five, if a fifth spot, should be a priority for Manchester United. It will give the team a clearer path financially, as well as potentially being able to attract a higher calibre of players.
Ineos will have been producing a Plan A, with Champions League football, and a Plan B, without. They would much prefer the first.
Defeats happen in football, but timing can be important. Ratcliffe will not be impressed that after he publicly outlined the importance of a top four finish, Manchester United have gone backwards.
There are extenuating circumstances, perhaps, with injuries. But the results are black and white.
Just like there’s a simple answer to ‘did you win a trophy?’, ‘yes’ or ‘no’, there is a definitive line, ‘did you qualify for the Champions League?’, ‘Yes’ or ‘no’. There are no ‘No, but…’ answers permitted.
Ratcliffe must deal with the consequences. Since he spoke out to underline the importance of the team’s finishing position, the Red Devils have gone backwards.
