Manchester United have confirmed Raphael Varane’s new squad number.
Varane will wear the number 19 shirt. The clues were there when Amad Diallo moved from that jersey to 16 when United’s shirt numbers were confirmed yesterday.
The number was earlier worn by Marcus Rashford, Danny Welbeck, Edwin van der Sar and Dwight Yorke, among others.
Varane also wore it in his very first season with Real Madrid, the 2011/12 campaign.
Varane had been linked with wearing the number 4 shirt, but this is currently assigned to Phil Jones.
Although Jones hasn’t played for the club since January 2020, the decision has been made not to take the number from him.
Varane was number 5 at Real Madrid, but he was never going to get that number from Harry Maguire.
He also wore 2 in the past for Madrid, but Victor Lindelof has that jersey for United.
The number is just a number at the end of the day, and United will be glad to finally be able to assign it so they can sell some shirts.
They will be popular with fans regardless, and Varane got an exceptional welcome when he was paraded on the pitch before the clash with Leeds.
United fans have to wait to see Varane’s debut, which could come next Sunday against Southampton.
But the 28-year-old has already had a taste of the Old Trafford atmosphere at his unveiling, where his shirt number was confirmed.
