Manchester United confirm Jesse Lingard will be released
Manchester United have confirmed Jesse Lingard as the latest player who will be released.
United made an announcement via the club website thanking Lingard for his services and wishing him the best of luck in the future.
The news followed the earlier official website announcement that Paul Pogba will leave the club.
Pogba later sent a message expressing how he felt ‘privileged’ to represent the club, upon his release for the second time in his career.
Jesse Lingard will be released
The news Jesse Lingard will be released was inevitable. He should have been sold a couple of summers ago.
Last season Lingard really should have been sold, after an impressive loan spell at West Ham, but he decided to stay.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not select him to start a single league game in 2021/22, and Ralf Rangnick only picked him to start two matches.
Lingard wanted to leave United in January, but United decided to keep him as cover. Despite this, he barely featured.
The 2021/22 season has been incredibly disappointing for Lingard, who lost his place in the England squad due to his lack of game time.
When he did play for United in the second half of the season, he struggled to make an impact.
His time at United ended on a sour note, with his brother blasting the club on social media for failing to give him a farewell appearance at Old Trafford.
Lingard’s career highlight for United was scoring the winning goal for the Red Devils in the FA Cup final in 2016 against Crystal Palace.
United are onto the fourth manager since then, and keeping him would have been a pointless move. Like Pogba, he needs to move on, and this exit is long overdue.
