His dogged, powerful display made clear from the very first minute, that there was no way Newcastle were going to score past Manchester United.
This weekend he continues his suspension, the second of four matches he will miss after his sending off against Southampton.
United’s point to prove
Manchester United are clearly a stronger side when Casemiro is in the starting line-up. But for now, the team must re-adjust without the £60 million man.
This is the first of three tough matches, with United facing Brentford in midweek, and Everton the following weekend.
United can set the tone for these games with an important three points against Newcastle. The doubters are already emerging, with Paul Merson forecasting a Newcastle victory.
The game against Newcastle is the toughest of the three upcoming matches. If United lose, and follow it up with wins against Brentford and Everton, doubts will still remain over the Red Devils ability to beat the best without Casemiro.
United have not had a big away league win over a top side yet this season. There have been defeats to City, Liverpool and Arsenal, and a draw against Chelsea.
This month United visit Newcastle and fellow top four rivals Tottenham. Winning at least one of these games is essential.
If Erik ten Hag’s side can accomplish this at the weekend without Casemiro, it will be a major statement.
