Paul Merson is predicting Manchester United to lose against Newcastle United in the Premier League this weekend.

Manchester United visit St James’ Park on Sunday, the first of nine games in a big month of April.

It is a rematch of the Carabao Cup final, a game Manchester United won 2-0 at Wembley.

The gap between the two clubs is just three points in the Red Devils favour, so this is a pivotal fixture at a late stage of the season.

Merson predicts United defeat

Manchester United are being written off before next month has already begun. In his column for SportsKeeda, Merson says the club could end up in fifth place in the Premier League table before the weekend is over.

The former Arsenal midfielder is predicting Manchester United to lose 2-1 to Newcastle.

Merson explained: “Manchester United aren’t playing well at the moment and they’re very reliant on Marcus Rashford and his goals. Someone else has got to chip in now.

“They’ve had some results but they aren’t ripping it up. Newcastle are playing at home and a draw isn’t good enough for them. I’m going to go with Newcastle to win this game.”

On one hand, Manchester United have it all to prove in our first Premier League away game since the heavy defeat at Liverpool.

Merson is wrong on the other counts, however. Manchester United have won three and drawn one of the four games since that defeat.

United also beat Fulham in the last game with goals from midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Marcel Sabitzer, without Marcus Rashford getting on the scoresheet.

This is the second of the four matches Casemiro is banned for, which is an obvious concern. United can really make a statement by winning without him.
