Manchester United have a lot of centre-backs. But few are of the desired quality.
It could be argued that Victor Lindelof is the only defender worthy of a starting spot. Chris Smalling has done okay, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are accidents waiting to happen, and Eric Bailly’s injury issues prevail.
So it would be no surprise if United sign at least one new centre-back this summer.
Toby Alderweireld would be the dream option alongside Lindelof. But United are reportedly making the right call about a potential future star.
According to the Daily Mail, Axel Tuanzebe will get the summer to prove his worth at Old Trafford.
This comes after a fine loan campaign at Aston Villa. And it is sensible given the 21-year-old’s innate talent and potential.
It would be easy for United to throw money at all their problems. But their academy cannot be overlooked.
Mason Greenwood may have a big role to play next season, and Tuanzebe deserves a shot at the opposite end of the field.
He has impressed in his eight senior appearances for United and deserves a lot more. If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer manages to bring in an experienced, quality centre-back, he could also be the teacher Tuanzebe needs to one day replace him.
