Manchester United are set to complete a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.
In the 2021/22 season, everything which could go wrong for Manchester United, did go wrong. This was typified by the club hiring a ‘set piece coach’ and then taking seven months to score a goal from one.
Last season, everything began to trend upward, including goals from set pieces. Christian Eriksen played a key part in turning this around.
New signing Mason Mount has the capability to add to this, and even take United’s production in this area to a new level.

Mason Mount set piece qualities
Mason Mount will add a lot to Manchester United’s game in possession and out of possession – and also from set pieces.
His ability from dead ball situations often goes under the radar, however, statistics back Mount up as one of the very best.
The Athletic report: “Having provided 13 assists from dead-ball situations in the past five seasons — only four players in the Premier League have since supplied more.”
Adding Mount’s qualities into the United side will help the Red Devils make the most out of potential set piece situations, and ensure there is no drop-off if he replaces Christian Eriksen in the starting XI.
Mount can score free-kicks too, and has his respect of Cristiano Ronaldo to thank for that.
Talksport reported how he spent hours as a youngster trying to emulate the Manchester United star’s famous free-kick against Portsmouth in 2008.
He said: “I try to base my free-kicks on Ronaldo. Hit the ball by the valve and it moves. That’s all you do. Top corner, top bins.”
United have agreed a £55 million fee with Chelsea to sign Mason Mount, with a further £5 million in add-ons.
The England international will become United’s first summer signing, with a desire to strengthen further at goalkeeper and striker.
Players have begun returning for pre-season training already, with the club’s first pre-season game set for July 12.
