Brandon Williams ‘has done really well’ since leaving Manchester United with the Premier League loanee a key part of an Ipswich Town side dreaming of successive promotions.

Still unbeaten since the opening day of the Championship campaign, if Brandon Williams wanted a fresh start after falling out of favour at Old Trafford then his move to Portman Road is certainly having the desired effect. The defender a man reborn at arguably the EFL’s most upwardly-mobile club.

Williams, a Manchester United academy graduate, has missed the last couple of games through injury. But the fact that Ipswich team-mate Harry Clarke still singled him out for praise after Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Swansea City is testament to the impact Williams has made since reuniting with former Red Devils coach Kieran McKenna in Anglia.

“Brandon has done really well since he joined us,” Clarke tells TWTD. “And the team has been winning, which is what we all want.”

Ipswich picked up five points out of nine in Williams’ absence, Clarke highlighting the depth available to McKenna with the likes of Marcus Harness, Freddie Ladapo, Dane Scarlett and another former Man United prospect in Axel Tuanzebe making an impact in recent weeks.

“The beauty of having a big, strong squad is that everybody will get an opportunity,” Clarke adds.

“Take Marcus the other day at Birmingham. He came on and scored twice to earn a very valuable point. Freddie and Dane also came on and played big parts for us and it shows the depth and quality of our squad.”

Successive promotions on the cards for Ipswich

The versatile Williams has thrived both as a right-back and a left-back under McKenna, scoring twice already. Ipswich have won every game, meanwhile, in which the 23-year-old has started.

“He’s getting back towards the levels that I know he’s capable of,” McKenna said a few weeks back. “But I think more importantly it’s about pushing him past those levels because he’s young and hopefully he’s got some good years in his career and big moments ahead of him.”
