Manchester United U18 defender Dante Plunkett has now been handed a call-up to the Jamaican national team.

The World Cup kicks off in just under two weeks, and international football is in full swing, both for Manchester United players heading to the tournament and some who are not going to North America.

Amir Ibragimov has linked up with Russia for their friendlies over the next few weeks. He didn’t feature against Egypt on Thursday, but has become the face of the national team and has been handed the number 10, so he should play against Burkina Faso next week.

While Tyler Fletcher has been training with the Scottish first-team for a training camp ahead of their World Cup journey, he isn’t in the tournament squad.

Now, Dante Plunkett is also set for international football.

Dante Plunkett receives a Jamaica call-up

United signed Plunkett from Aston Villa in 2024 after a successful trial at the club.

Although it hasn’t been smooth sailing for him thus far, he has still played a lot of U18 football and has the raw qualities that could see him become a brilliant Premier League footballer.

Jamaica clearly believes in his potential, as the Caribbean side has handed him a first-team call-up for the Unity Cup Final against Nigeria on Saturday night.

United’s official website detailed the call-up, with the final set to be played at The Valley, home to Charlton Athletic.

Plunkett was born in Birmingham but has roots in Jamaica, and now he looks set to commit his allegiance to the Reggae Boyz.

Jamaica beat India in the semi-finals to reach this stage, and now Nigeria awaits for Plunkett to potentially make his professional debut.

Plunkett has the chance for silverware after Manchester United disappointment

Winning the Unity Cup would be an incredible experience for Plunkett, also allowing him to end his season with a trophy, which he didn’t manage with United.

Plunkett played in United’s FA Youth Cup final loss to Manchester City earlier this month, which will have been a tough defeat for the youngsters.

In addition to this defeat, United also lost the Premier League Cup final, while Plunkett wasn’t in the playing squad, it was still a trophy he would have played a part in lifting.

Playing some first-team football for Jamaica can only be a good thing for his development, and we should see Plunkett arrive back for pre-season a much better prospect.
