Manchester United will face familiar foes again when they take to the pitch for a game next time, up against Manchester City in the Community Shield final.
Don’t tell Jose Mourinho, but Community Shield is commonly regarded as an extension of the pre-season with a trophy at stake.
However, it is never a friendly when the Manchester Derby is involved, and it is expected to be a hotly contested game, with Erik ten Hag recently boosted by return of four players to training.
The narrative is clear, City will want to avenge the FA Cup final loss while United will look to make it consecutive wins over their neighbours.
So, how does recent history match up for this game? Here are Man Utd vs Man City last ten results.

Man Utd vs Man City last ten results have yielded just three wins for the Red Devils, with the blue side of Manchester winning seven, zero draws.
The teams have competed in three different competitions. There have been seven fixtures in the Premier League, two FA Cup meetings, and one League Cup outing.
City won the sole League Cup outing, back in January 2021, while the FA Cup record is one win for each, with United’s win memorably coming in the FA Cup final at the end of last season.
City’s FA Cup win was also in the final a year before, stressing the high stakes involved whenever these two teams meet in knockout cup competitions.
In these ten games, City’s 6-3 win and 4-1 win stand as the biggest victories, while United’s best win has been by a scoreline of 2-0 which came at the Etihad Stadium under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Unpacking the numbers
It is a measure of the contrast in stability at both clubs that all ten of these meetings have seen Pep Guardiola in the manager’s seat, while for United, these ten games have been managed by three different managers- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag.
All three managers tasted defeat against Guardiola and until the FA Cup final win, Ten Hag’s record was pretty abysmal too outside of a single win.
The hope will be that as the new-look United work towards finally implementing an overarching philosophy, the results can start to improve as well.
The wins under Solskjaer came mainly as a result of hitting City on transitions, and it has been a long time since United have actually been able to dominate these games.
Having said that, very rarely do teams “dominate” the ball against City so the Norwegian’s blueprint for success has been used to great effect by Ten Hag as well.
Still, a record of just three wins in their last ten meetings doesn’t reflect well on a club that calls City “noisy neighbours”.
The onus is on Ten Hag to start reversing that trend and the FA Cup final was a great start. Now to continue it with consecutive wins over City for the first time since 2020… The Community Shield awaits.
