The winds of change are blowing at Manchester United but apparently, those winds are not just limited to current personnel at the club!
Sir Alex Ferguson’s contract being terminated by Ineos dominated the agenda recently as more changes were rung by the new regime.
Soon this news was followed by another shock departure of a Manchester United legend three years after he left his role at Old Trafford.
That someone is Nicky Butt, who has stepped down from his role as CEO at League Two club Salford City to focus on his coaching career.
Butt took over from Gary Neville in October 2022, just a year after leaving United as the head of first-team development.
Nicky Butt leaves Salford, what next?
Salford City has all of Manchester United’s famous “Class of ’92” on the board and this is the second shock departure from the club in recent months.
Ryan Giggs was the sporting director at the club but he stepped down recently as well, while Gary Neville was replaced by Butt since he stepped down in October 2022.
In his official statement announcing his departure, he said that he yearns for the coaching side of the game again and is looking forward to getting back on the grass.
He said: “Whilst I have enjoyed the day-to-day responsibilities of the chief executive role and discovered a huge amount about the challenges an EFL club faces away from the football pitch, I have recently realised how much I miss the coaching and development of players, and this has increased my desire to get back into that side of the game.
“Over the past few months there have been several exciting opportunities put forward to me that have put my focus back on coaching and on the grass.”
Butt talks about potential opportunities he has received and with a man of his reputation in the game, on and off the field, it is likely that he will find himself in another job soon.

Nicky Butt’s strength aligns with Ineos’ vision
The Man Utd U18s won three trophies last season and the first team is consistently seeing an influx of talent from the academy.
The academy is at the best place it has arguably been in the 21st century, especially compared to just ten years ago when the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City had pulled far ahead.
However, Nicky Butt’s induction into the academy setup alongside the likes of Nick Cox has transformed the youth system at United.
United have been extremely proactive in the youth market since, while also casting their net far and wide to get a hold of the best young prospects around the area too.
It has resulted in the likes of Shea Lacey and Amir Ibragimov being at the club, while sons of former players, who had thought of the City academy as the best place for their kids’ development, have brought them back to Carrington, for example, Jack and Tyler Fletcher.
With Ineos making a concerted effort to plan for the future and recruit young players either for the future or as immediate contributors, Butt can be a good addition, especially as the structure he left disillusioned with is no longer present.
