Manchester United are linked with a barrage of names every transfer window, each coming with a backstory of his own but this one might take the cake.
It is not often that Man Utd are linked to a player that nobody knows about, although it has started happening more often under Ineos’ structure, which is a good sign.
That happened again recently, following the signing of Diego Leon, as United’s interest in Nene Dorgeles of RB Salzburg took many by surprise.
Christopher Vivell’s history with RB could be crucial to Dorgeles interest but it came out of nowhere and now, a deep dive into his career has revealed some left-field stories, including this one.

Nene Dorgeles’ “embarrassing” socks gaffe
Nene Dorgeles might not be a household name as yet but he’s already played at the grandest stage of European football – the Champions League.
His team, RB Salzburg, haven’t had a very good time of things in the league this season, sitting in the 32nd position after winning just one of their first six games.
Dorgeles has started three of those six games and has yet to score or assist in Europe but his mistake while being on the bench in a game made him the centre of all sorts of wrong headlines this season.
During Salzburg’s UCL game against Bayer Leverkusen, a fixture they would lose 0-5, Dorgeles was asked by his manager to be ready to come on.
Karim Konate had picked up an injury and Dorgeles was about to receive a great chance to make an impact. The only problem was that he wasn’t ready…
The cameras picked him up in the middle of putting on his socks before coming on, a sight that had Andreas Herzog, former Austrian footballer, raging.
He said (via Heute): “He’s being substituted and he doesn’t even have his socks on. He’s making Salzburg look ridiculous all over Europe.
“That’s crazy. People always say: It’s the dream to play in the Champions League. And then he’s not even prepared, with all due respect. That’s embarrassing.”
Nene Dorgeles is a project signing
At 22, Dorgeles has his best days ahead of him so even if United sign him, fans shouldn’t expect a finished product who contributes from day one.
Dorgeles has good fundamentals that perfectly suits what Ruben Amorim wants from his players and it is presumably those fundamentals that have attracted United to him.
It is also the type of signing United have failed to make far too often in the past, only getting into the act when the player has already established himself as a known quantity.
Moises Caicedo remains a case in point for that line of thinking, something which Ineos seems determined to avoid, even if that means taking a punt on a raw talent like Dorgeles.
Ultimately, leaving it up to the manager to improve players instead of going after the new shiny toy in every transfer window is a much more intelligent approach.
Dorgeles interest personifies that, ready with socks or not!
