Man Utd star withdraws from national team after injury vs Burnley, blow for Ruben Amorim

It hasn’t been all positive for Manchester United following the 3-2 victory over Burnley on Saturday.

Ruben Amorim wasn’t able to watch when Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the game-deciding penalty in the 97th minute on Saturday.

However, he heard Old Trafford erupt in celebration as Fernandes and there would have been a sigh of relief from the head coach.

United beat Burnley 3-2 in the end to notch up a first win of the 2025/26 season and move onto four points.

As a result of the win and promising performance, there will be positivity around United heading into transfer deadline day.

Despite the good, there was some bad for United, namely in the form of some injury blows.

Matheus Cunha withdraws from Brazil squad for international break

Performance and result were both promising for United, but Amorim won’t smile too much as two of his biggest players were withdrawn early through injury concerns.

Both Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount were taken off through injury before the second half had even started.

Cunha was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee in the 30th minute, as he limped down the tunnel. Then Mount didn’t emerge for the second half with Kobbie Mainoo as his replacement.

Amorim suggested Mount’s injury withdrawal was a precaution, but Cunha’s is slightly more serious, and he has now been withdrawn from the Brazilian squad, with The Athletic sharing the statement.

“After a conversation between the medical departments of Manchester United and the National Team, attacker Matheus Cunha was released from the call-up due to the muscle injury suffered in the match against Burnley.”

Matheus Cunha’s injury record before joining Manchester United

Cunha walked out of Old Trafford post-game unaided, not limping and without any protective gear, which suggests that he isn’t too seriously injured.

Amorim will be desperate for the Brazilian to be fit to face Manchester City in a fortnight, with the mercurial talent one of United’s best players.

Cunha’s injury record gives us confidence that he will be fine.

This is Cunha’s third muscle-related injury of his career, which could mean it is one that he simply needs to rest and that could take a week or two.

Hopefully, Cunha is back to feature in his first Manchester derby.
