Man Utd set to hire former Man City coach after Travis Binnion recommendation

Manchester United are set to appoint a new coach who previously worked with Jason Wilcox at Manchester City.

Ineos have made many changes to change the structure at Manchester United. From senior directors to staff further down the chain, the workforce has been cut significantly, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has handed over key responsibilities to chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Perhaps one of the biggest decisions made by Ineos was the sacking of Erik ten Hag and the appointment of Ruben Amorim.

Amorim brought his coaching staff from Sporting CP to Old Trafford, while the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mitchell van der Gaag left the club.

United are continuing to make changes at the academy level following the announcement of Nick Cox’s exit earlier this year.

Man Utd in negotiations with Alan Wright

Former Man City youth team coach Alan Wright is on the verge of joining United.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are in talks to appoint the former Premier League defender, who spent 10 years at City, to coach the U16 team.

It is understood that Wright will join the academy to coach in the Professional Development Phase group, including players aged between U18s and U21s, who are preparing for careers at the senior level.

After leaving City, Wright took a job at a sports agency in February 2024, but he is now set to work with Wilcox again.

Despite Wright having worked with Wilcox in the past, the Manchester Evening News claims that U21 coach and head of player development, Travis Binnion, advised Wright for the role.

Binnion recently singled out Amir Ibragimov for praise after his recent performances in the U18s, which suggests there is plenty of talent for United fans to get excited about in the future.

An official announcement is expected for Wright once the appointment has been finalised.

Who did Alan Wright play for?

Wright played for several clubs during his professional career.

His main clubs include Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, and Sheffield United.

Wright also had spells at Derby County, Leeds, Cardiff City, Doncaster Rovers, Cheltenham Town and Fleetwood Town.
