Ruben Amorim has now spoken out on Manchester United star Andre Onana leaving Old Trafford and signing on loan for Turkish side Trabzonspor on Thursday.

Andre Onana finally made his exit from the Premier League club after the 29-year-old Cameroonian shot-stopper lost his place as the Manchester United No 1.

Trabzonspor showed interest in Onana ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday and the Super Lig outfit agreed to take the United star out on loan.

Onana had only made one appearance for the Red Devils this season, with the former Ajax star committing a howler in United’s shock defeat to Grimsby Town.

Andre Onana will now spend the 2025-26 season out on loan in Turkey and the Manchester United shot-stopper is surplus to requirements for Ruben Amorim.

Amorim has opted to start Altay Bayindir ahead of the former Inter Milan ‘keeper in the Premier League, with Onana on the bench for the last two league matches.

Speaking ahead of the Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday, Amorim was asked about Onana’s departure from Old Trafford on Thursday.

The 40-year-old United manager insisted that there “needed” to be a “change” and the decision was made to let the Cameroon international sign for Trabzonspor.

“It could be [considered Onana staying], but I think as a club, we understood it needed a change,” he said at his press conference on Friday, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“Sometimes it’s hard to [pin]point why, the performance, the moment, the bad luck in some moments was hard on him.”

Ruben Amorim explains Man Utd’s ‘thinking’ around Andre Onana’s Old Trafford exit and his feelings on the Trabzonspor player

Onana’s fate at United was sealed when the Red Devils made a deadline-day move for a new shot-stopper, with Senne Lammens arriving at Old Trafford last week.

Amorim admitted at his pre-match press conference that United felt it was right to “have a change” and the Red Devils boss praised Onana’s character as a player.

“Our thinking was to have a change with the goalkeepers, but I wish the best with Andre Onana,” he continued.

“He was really good at working and helping the players. But sometimes you need to change the environment.”

According to Sky Sports, Trabzonspor will be covering Onana’s hefty United wages during the period of his loan spell at the Super Lig outfit.

United splashed out a £47.2m fee to land Cameroon international Onana from Inter Milan in 2023 during Erik ten Hag’s managerial reign at the Premier League club.

The Red Devils travel to the Etihad on Sunday and will face Manchester City in the Premier League for their first match since the start of the international break.
