Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood made his first start for Getafe in a draw against Athletic Bilbao.

With two substitute appearances at Getafe so far, the La Liga side handed Mason Greenwood his first start last night as they rotated their line-up.

Greenwood played all 90 minutes at Bilbao’s San Mames, and Spanish newspaper AS noted the crowd were ‘against him.

Mason Greenwood assist

Mason Greenwood is still looking for his first goal in Spain, however, he did manage to provide an assist in this game, his first start for the club.

He did so with a cross to Gaston Alvarez in the 51st minute which the defender converted to make it 1-1.

The forward created two chances in the game, and had one shot, which was blocked.

Greenwood signed for Getafe on transfer deadline day, after being told there was no path to the Manchester United first team.

The 21-year-old is looking to rejuvenate his career. His debut for Getafe earlier this month was his first game since his arrest in January 2022. Charges against him were dropped earlier this year.

Ander Herrera leads Athletic Bilbao

Getafe’s opponents were led by Ander Herrera, who shared a dressing room with Mason Greenwood at the end of his spell at the club in the second half of the 2018/19 season.

Herrera has been dogged by injuries lately and this was his first start of the season. He lasted 78 minutes and completed more passes than any player on the pitch.

The 34-year-old spoke to AS after the game to express his pleasure at being back in the line-up. He said: “It wasn’t the perfect game to play 90 minutes, but I’m satisfied. I try to be useful to the team.

“I really enjoy this team, this club and this city. It has been a positive game for me. I try to be prepared for the next one. I really enjoy being available.”

Herrera’s Athletic Bilbao rank up in fourth place in La Liga, while Greenwood’s Getafe are in 10th position.
