A Manchester United legend under Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he “gained something else” after he made the big decision to leave Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary reign came to an end in 2013 after the legendary former Manchester United manager bowed out of management.
The 83-year-old iconic Scotsman led the Red Devils to their last Premier League title in the 2012-13 campaign, with Ferguson subsequently departing Old Trafford.
Ferguson is widely regarded as one of the best managers of all time, with the Scot having a major impact in England with United and in Scotland with Aberdeen.
The former Aberdeen boss was the first manager in history to lead an English team to a continental treble, with United pulling off the feat in the 1998-99 campaign.
Ferguson ushered in an incredible period of success for United during his 26-year reign, including capturing 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.
The United legend’s squads of the past were stacked to the brim with star-studded talent, including the likes of Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Peter Schmeichel.

Man Utd legend on ‘regrets’ at club
Sir Alex Ferguson pulled off one of his best Manchester United signings of all time after he brought Peter Schmeichel to Old Trafford in 1991 from Brondby.
Peter Schmeichel was a mainstay for Manchester United during the 1990s and the 61-year-old Dane had a sensational impact in the Premier League.
Signed for a £505,000 fee, the United legend lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, three FA Cups and a League Cup with the Red Devils.
Schmeichel was a key part of the iconic treble-winning side in 1999, but even the former United No 1 has spoken about his struggles with form in the season.
The ex-Denmark international is the subject of a new two-part SkyShowtime documentary, aptly called ‘Schmeichel,’ which will be released on 9th February.
Speaking in the documentary, Schmeichel admitted that he made a “massive mistake” when he left United in 1999 and signed for Sporting CP.
The former United and Denmark shot-stopper later added that he was “mentally fatigued” and “completely drained” when he made his exit from Old Trafford.
“For someone who loves Man United like I do, it’s crazy when you’re there to leave on your own accord,” Schmeichel told Deadline.
“I was just mentally fatigued, and I was completely drained.”
The United legend added: “It’s really difficult to talk about ‘regrets’, because I went to Portugal, and I had a fantastic time there, not so much on [the] football side, but on a human basis.
“I met people there who are my friends today. So yes, I left Man United, but I gained something else.”
Ferguson on Man Utd legend Schmeichel
Schmeichel had a brief spell with Sporting CP before he left Portugal and returned to England, with the former United star signing for Aston Villa in 2001.
The Dane later made a controversial move to United’s rivals Manchester City in 2002 before he announced his retirement from football in 2003.
Ferguson, who features in the two-part Schmeichel documentary, admitted that he has incredible admiration for the former United No 1.
“He was a great player for me, a great character, and a person I really admired,” he said.
“When you look at the 100-year history of Man United, Peter is right at the top of that.”
