Manchester United legend Michael Carrick has been backed to manage one Premier League club after his work in his first managerial spell with Middlesbrough.

That is according to talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino, who believes that Michael Carrick could be a manager that “would fit the bill” at one Premier League side.

Carrick had an illustrious playing career at club level and the Manchester United legend made a whopping 464 appearances for the Red Devils.

During his time at Old Trafford, the 43-year-old lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, a Europa League, an FA Cup and three League Cups.

Carrick called it time on his playing career in 2018 before he took up a coaching role with Jose Mourinho and later served under United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Middlesbrough boss briefly became caretaker manager in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked and ahead of the arrival of Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford.

Man Utd legend Carrick at Middlesbrough

Following his time at Manchester United, Michael Carrick took his first steps into management after he was appointed the head coach of Middlesbrough in 2022.

Middlesbrough finished fourth in the Championship in the 2022-23 season under Carrick, who took over the club when they were 21st in the league table.

However, the Boro fell short of reaching the Premier League after Coventry City knocked them out of the play-offs in the semi-final in 2023.

Carrick led Middlesbrough to eighth place in the Championship last season and the United legend’s side enjoyed a scintillating run to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The former England and United midfielder has Middlesbrough keeping pace with the Championship top four this season, with the Boro currently sixth in the table.

Middlesbrough have won eight of their 16 Championship matches in the 2024-25 campaign and Carrick’s men are only five points adrift from fourth-place Leeds.

Cascarino backs Carrick for Premier League club

Speaking on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino has insisted that Carrick would fit West Ham if the Hammers axe under-pressure manager Julen Lopetegui.

“You know West Ham fans, I think the owner is always trying to appease them with the sort of manager that would fit the bill,” he said.

“Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough were a bit flying. A big old win yesterday, 6-2 [against Oxford United], top goalscorers in the Championship at the moment [on 29 goals].

“And they’re what, lying fifth? I think they’re fifth, yeah, fifth in the Championship and there’s been a bit of a turnaround there. So, he’ll be an obvious candidate for someone like West Ham.

“Because the fans would certainly embrace one of their players that they had many moons ago and bring a style of football that West Ham fans so dearly want.”
