Manchester United legend Gary Neville hilariously couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a cheeky swipe at Jamie Carragher over Jurgen Klopp’s decision to step down as Liverpool manager.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have not been afraid to trade verbal blows and aim cheeky digs over United and Liverpool during their time on Sky Sports punditry.

Jurgen Klopp stunned the world on Friday after he announced that he would leave Anfield at the end of the season, with the Liverpool boss claiming that he is “running out of energy.”

Following the Liverpool manager’s decision, Manchester United fans reacted to the news and couldn’t help but recall Erik ten Hag’s telling message after his arrival at Old Trafford.

United manager Ten Hag also shared his two cents on Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool, as the 56-year-old German prepares to call it time on his nine-year run at Anfield.

Neville’s dig on Carragher over Klopp

Speaking in his column for The Daily Telegraph, Jamie Carragher admitted that his “heart sank” at Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool and thought it was “some kind of hoax.”

“My heart sank [with the news]. I genuinely thought it was some kind of hoax, or cruel joke,” he wrote.

“That’s the greatest measure of a manager’s class — when rivals are celebrating the departure, it shows how much the coach has been admired and feared.”

Carragher added in the newspaper: “Klopp changed people’s lives, recreating the European glory nights synonymous with Anfield.

“The rest of the season will be highly emotional.”

Gary Neville took to his Instagram account and shared a photo of him and Carragher, with the United legend hilariously trolling his fellow Sky Sports pundit with the caption.

“Klopps [sic] leaving do,” he wrote on Saturday, adding a thumbs-up emoji.

Ten Hag on Klopp’s Liverpool decision

Speaking ahead of United’s FA Cup clash with Newport County, Ten Hag admitted that he was happy that Klopp had “everything in his own hands” over his decision.

The former Ajax boss added that a top-level manager will know how important it is to prove to themselves they can keep doing what they’re doing daily.

“We have to look to ourselves and keep working and reconstructing this club,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“We know we need to be better. Last season we were overperforming. Now we have a downfall and we have to stop this, but I think it belongs to the project.

“It’s great that Klopp has kept everything in his own hands to step down the moment he wanted it, when he wanted his era to come to an end.

“When you’re involved in top-level football, I think you know that you have to prove yourself every day — and that counts for everyone who is working for this club, too.”
