Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd career will forever be tied to how he treated Kobbie Mainoo, but he has another, bigger embarrassment.
At least in the case of Kobbie Mainoo, it was obvious to most that Ruben Amorim was making a huge mistake with his stance on the midfielder.
Mainoo has proven as much since Amorim’s sacking, powering his way into the World Cup squad and vindicating his quality on multiple occasions.
However, another player is quickly emerging as a bigger embarrassment for Amorim, because he wasn’t rated at all under him.

How would you RATE Patrick Dorgu’s season for Manchester United?📈
Should he be starting as a winger or full-back next season?
Ruben Amorim almost buried Patrick Dorgu’s Man Utd prospects
Mainoo is proving the obvious, but Patrick Dorgu is showing how Amorim almost wrote off his Man Utd career before it even took off.
Brought in as a left-wing-back, he made his debut on the right, then played on the left, had stints as a left-winger, and always failed to stand out.
Diogo Dalot was starting over him on the left despite being on his right foot, all the while Amorim complained that he ‘felt anxiety’ every time Dorgu touched the ball.
For a youngster coming from a relegation-threatened side in the middle of a tumultuous season, that is the last thing he needs to hear from his manager.
Confidence breeds confidence, but insecurity breeds insecurity, and that is exactly the seed of doubt Amorim planted in Dorgu’s head.
Worse still, Amorim had Man Utd fans on strings, so they started writing Dorgu off as well, despite Amorim setting him up to fail.
Less than six months since he was sacked, Dorgu is making a mockery of those claims.
Dorgu is embarrassing Amorim now
The same player who gave Amorim anxiety when he touched the ball is striking fear into the opponent’s hearts when he’s on it.
How much is Patrick Dorgu worth now in 2026?
Fans have even been comparing him to Gareth Bale!
Dorgu has flourished with added freedom, not relinquishing his responsibilities in the process for club and country.
Be it on the left-wing, where he was key under Carrick, or his recent exploits on the right, where he scored another wonderstrike against Ukraine, Dorgu is unstoppable.
United had this player all along, but he was being set up to fail by Amorim, which is becoming a concerning theme.
Mainoo was the obvious case of misuse, but Dorgu is a damning case of failing to tap hidden potential.
