In a flood of positive news coming out about Manchester United in the last few days, the news of Willy Kambwala reportedly rejecting a new contract came as a downer.

Willy Kambwala came out of nowhere last season to become a dependable squad option and the hope is that he will kick on this season.

Therefore, the report of Kambwala rejecting a new contract has got the fans reacting heavily after it spread like fire on social media, with one theme cropping up repeatedly after journalist Christopher Michel said the same.

Man United fans react to Willy Kambwala report

Manchester United fans were shocked by these reports and it ignited a mix response once the initial surprise wore off. Some were sad that he has chosen to leave, as he showed enough last season to promise a long-term future.

A user on X, formerly known as Twitter, said, “This makes no sense at all. He isn’t even that far off of getting consistent minutes at United”.

Shock gave way to sadness for one, who wrote, “Ohhh no! My boy should agree to go out on loan and extend. See what happens after a couple of years if he can’t get into the first team. I really like his passion for the club”.

Another said United would be making a mistake if they let him go and instead spend millions on transfers, “Rather keep his progression going than sign Branthwaite for that price”.

The theme of United’s transfer strategy kept cropping up throughout. Many fans took an understanding view of his situation in light of the club bidding for three young center-backs in this window.

One said, “I understand how he feels. We’re buying players in his position. I assumed he would go out on loan”.

Another echoed similar sentiments, “I mean he’s got to reconsider considering the players profile we are approaching recently. If a good fee comes in, take it, if not, he’s the one I’ll love to see thrive”.

There was a lot of support for this theory as one wrote, “Totally get him. Look at the ages of defenders United want to sign. I’d take time to really decide”.

Finally, some were not convinced by the player at all and thought it is the right time to move on, especially if United manage to get all three targets. One said, “Not good enough long term anyway. I’d call the right decision for his career. Needs games now”.

Others were more ruthless about it, saying, “Good riddance, Yoro is coming, he can go”.

Making sense of the situation

If Kambwala has indeed rejected a new contract, then the fans might be spot on about the theme that keeps cropping up.

Kambwala is older than Leny Yoro and only about two years younger than Jarrad Branthwaite, two of United’s targets. Furthermore, Matthijs de Ligt, a player who has already seen and won so much in football, is still only 24.

With Martinez at 26, the core of United’s defence could be well set up for the next half a decade, if not more. Adding youth players like Jack Kingdon, and signing cheap, reliable backups like Jonny Evans could be how United finish polishing their center-back situation.

It leaves Kambwala in an awkward position where he can’t afford to be a fringe player at his age. A loan move could guarantee games but he could prefer a settled future at one club and go from there instead of surveying his options after every year.

For now, the waiting game on official news goes on with the clock ticking on his contract which expires next year.
