Man Utd confirm 23-man travelling squad for Europa League quarter-final vs Lyon, Kobbie Mainoo returns

Manchester United will hope to get one foot into the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night by beating Lyon over in France.

Despite the struggles Ruben Amorim has had since taking charge in November, in the Europa League he holds an unbeaten record so far which set up this week’s clash with Lyon.

Manchester United are the only team in European competitions this season to be unbeaten through the entire campaign, despite the early struggles under Erik ten Hag which saw three draws to open the campaign.

United’s route to the Europa League final goes through Lyon, then either Bilbao or Rangers, and of the teams remaining, the Red Devils are as good as any.

Winning the Europa League is huge for Amorim, both financially and giving the team a confidence boost after a horrid season.

Now, United are heading to France for the first leg, with the ambition of gaining an advantage ahead of the second leg next week at Old Trafford.

Manchester United announce travelling squad to face Lyon

On the eve of this clash, United have announced through club media the 23-man squad which is travelling to France, as Amorim finally makes use of his full squad size with 12 substitutes brought to France, including four academy starlets.

Goalkeepers: Bayindir, Heaton, Onana.

Defenders: Amass, Dalot, Dorgu, Kamason, Kukonki, Lindelof, Maguire, Mazraoui, Shaw, Yoro.

Midfielders: Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes, Mainoo, Moorhouse, Mount, Ugarte.

Forwards: Garnacho, Hojlund, Zirkzee.

Manchester United name strong squad to face Lyon

Previous rounds of the competition have seen Amorim criticised for not utilising all the spaces in his squad, with just 18 United players named in the squad which faced Sociedad last month.

However, for the quarter-finals, Amorim has made full use of his 23-man allotment, naming four youngsters on the squad along with the returning Kobbie Mainoo.

This is a massive boost for Amorim and will give him far more options and solutions to problems which Lyon may present.

This squad is back to near full capacity with Shaw and Mainoo’s massive additions. Things are shaping up nicely for United’s run in this season, with a very strong chance of winning the Europa League.

Hopefully, we will see some debutants and returning stars in action on Thursday night.
