Manchester United’s Europa League pursuit continues on Thursday over in Spain against Real Sociedad.
Despite the turmoil domestically, Manchester United’s European tour this season has been all sunshine and rainbows.
Erik ten Hag did his best to ruin the Europa League campaign, drawing all three of the games he took charge of, adding to his worrying European record.
However, under Ruud van Nistelrooy and now Ruben Amorim, Manchester United have won five on the bounce to put themselves among the favourites to go all the way to Bilbao.

United are in Spain to take on Sociedad on Thursday for the opening leg of the clash and will be hoping to give themselves an easy second leg next week at Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s 18-man squad to face Real Sociedad
On the eve of this clash, United have announced through club media, the 18-man squad which is travelling to Spain.
Goalkeepers: Andre Onana, Dermot Mee, Elyh Harrison
Defenders: Harry Amass, Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, Victor Lindelof, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro
Midfielders: Casemiro, Toby Collyer, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes
Attackers: Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee.
Amorim has not filled his bench for the trip to Spain which seems harsh and also unwise – leaving himself needlessly short with options from the bench.
Ruben Amorim will have disappointed four Manchester United players
There are few surprises in the United squad heading to Spain, but eyebrows will be raised due to Amorim not using his entire squad space.
Amorim left out four United players who had been spotted in first-team training prior to the team departing.
- Jack Fletcher
- Jack Moorhouse
- Jaydan Kamason
- James Scanlon
All four of these academy talents have been in senior training yet not deemed ready to even travel and sit on the bench against Sociedad which is a bizarre decision.
Amorim’s decision could prove costly if he happens to end up needing options from the bench, with no attacking reinforcements beyond his probable starting line-up.
For the youngsters, it will be disappointing to think that Amorim would rather have four empty seats on his bench.
