The race for Manchester United’s caretaker manager to see out the 2025/26 season is heating up with Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in competition.

It has been a whirlwind week for Manchester United, with the club sacking Ruben Amorim on Monday, sparking a frantic recruitment drive for a caretaker manager.

United are considering three potential caretakers right now, with Michael Carrick, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Ruud van Nistelrooy are under review.

Meanwhile, Darren Fletcher continues as interim against Brighton, as he will have outside hopes of proving to Ineos that he is the man for the job.

Here are all the latest updates around United’s search for a new manager.

Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer meet with Manchester United

After a few days of rapid developments, Manchester United’s race has been eerily quiet over the past 48 hours.

However, now we have an update on meetings between caretaker hopefuls and United’s decision makers.

According to the Daily Mail, Carrick met with CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox on Thursday to discuss potentially taking the role.

Meanwhile, it will be Solskjaer’s turn on Saturday to meet with the Ineos chiefs as he bids to return to the club for a third time.

Additionally, Fletcher is also considered a possibility, having made a good impression since taking charge on Monday, and cannot be ruled out.

United are seriously considering Carrick, with Solskjaer still thought to be the favourite.

Carrick and Solskjaer working together now ruled out

All week, there has been the idea that United could end up welcoming both Carrick and Solskjaer back to work together at the club.

However, the Daily Mail has also reported that the idea of the pair working together has been ruled out, with both considered managers.

Whether this means Fletcher could still be used as a coach alongside Carrick or Solskjaer remains to be seen, but it seems the duo of 2018 won’t be making a comeback.

There are positives and negatives to all three, with Ineos weighing these up ahead of making a decision, hopefully over the weekend or early next week.
