Man Utd now worst in the Premier League in damning area, it’s not Ruben Amorim’s fault

The 2025/26 campaign is still in its infancy for Manchester United, but already, there is a concerning trend developing, which is largely out of Ruben Amorim’s control.

After such a strong summer transfer window, Manchester United would have expected a better start to the season. Instead, Ruben Amorim has his side 14th in the table with two losses, one draw, and a solitary win.

This makes for grim reading and already sees five managers linked with replacing Amorim, as each game now looks like a must-win.

Amorim is under serious scrutiny at United; however, he is not the sole culprit in the Red Devils’ failure to win games and pick up points.

However, while there are clear issues within the system, Amorim will be frustrated and perplexed over how his side has only scored two goals in the Premier League.

Defensively, almost all of the goals United have conceded are avoidable and come down to individual errors in goal or the back-line.

Now, United are ranked worst in the league for one concerning statistic.

Manchester United’s expected goals underperformance showcases a big problem

Nobody can argue that Amorim’s system works after 10 months of evidence to the contrary; however, what can be argued is that he has coached United much better than the players have shown this season.

While the defensive issues come through the midfield not being good enough and then individual errors, the goal problems are also caused by players underperforming.

United have the second-highest expected goals in the Premier League, according to the league’s website, second only to Manchester City.

Premier League highest xG 2025/26 (overperformance – and underperformance +)

  1. Manchester City – 8.47 (-0.47)
  2. Manchester United – 8.29 (+4.29)
  3. Chelsea – 7.95 (-1.05)
  4. Brighton – 6.83 (+2.83
  5. Arsenal – 6.51 (-2.49)

If United were converting at the same level that Arsenal, City, and Chelsea are, then the Red Devils would easily be sitting on three wins right now.

These are the fine lines between winning and losing in the Premier League, but it is proof that United cannot be written off, as clinical finishing could see Amorim’s side fly up the table.

Manchester United’s summer transfer gamble is so far going wrong

For United, the summer saw two of the Premier League’s best players arrive, but there was one concern.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both exceeded their xG last season, which was always going to be unlikely to be repeated this campaign at United.

So after four Premier League games, this is coming true, with Bruno Fernandes, Amad, and Joshua Zirkzee also far underperforming their expected goals.

Combined, this sees United with the worst underperformance in the league, dragging the team from an expected 9th place to 14th. However, it should give hope that Amorim can still come good, with Senne Lammens solidifying the defence and finishing improving.
