Andre Onana is one of few Manchester United players who can hold his head high this season.
The Cameroon international faced a lot of criticism last season after a rocky start to his Manchester United career.
But Andre Onana has never been short of confidence or self-belief and he has not only improved in his second season, but arguably been one of United’s best players.
The Red Devils have endured a terrible start to the season and sit 13th in the Premier League table after losing three of the opening six games.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 12 | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 8 | 10 | -2 | 7 | |
| 13 | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 5 | 8 | -3 | 7 | |
| 14 | 6 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 6 | 10 | -4 | 5 |
The poor start has left Erik ten Hag facing the sack with the Dutchman given two games to save his job at Old Trafford, starting with Thursday’s clash against Porto.
But had it not been for this season’s ‘MVP’ Onana, United and Ten Hag would be in an even worse position.
Andre Onana has impressed this season
Onana was brought in to replace David de Gea between the sticks, but a number of mistakes early on last season immediately put him on the back foot.
However, Onana grew into the season and ended the campaign with a strong run of form. He has started this season even better and is statistically one of the biggest overperforming goalkeepers across Europe so far in terms of shot-stopping.
He has been described as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet by former United shot-stopper Anders Lindegaard, while Peter Schmeichel hailed him as “world-class”.
When United put in their worst performance of the season in the awful 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, Onana was the only player who deserved praise after making several blockbuster saves.
However, his best action of the season came earlier in the campaign against Crystal Palace.
Andre Onana up for award after ‘exceptional’ save
Onana is already building up an impressive catalogue of saves this season, but by far his best came against Palace.
The “exceptional” double save against Palace has now been nominated for the Premier League’s September Save of the Month award.
The game frustratingly ended as a draw with United missing too many big chances in front of goal. But without Onana’s spectacular double save it could have ended in defeat.
Ten Hag was full of praise for Onana after the Palace draw, describing him as “explosive”.
There has not been much for Onana and United to smile about so far this season but he may soon get his hands on what would be a well-earned individual award.
