Man United senior figure at risk of punishment after footage shows ‘beserk’ reaction to Matthijs de Ligt incident

Manchester United were left outraged by Brentford’s opening goal at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors took the lead through Ethan Pinnock on the brink of half-time after Manchester United were reduced to 10-man for a last-gasp corner.

Matthijs de Ligt was forced to the sidelines for treatment of a head injury and Brentford capitalised while United’s £38m summer signing was out of action.

De Ligt was pictured reacting furiously on the touchline after he had to sit and watch United concede.

Thankfully, Erik ten Hag inspired his side to a second-half comeback with Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund both on the scoresheet as United picked up their third Premier League win of the season.

Darren Fletcher goes ‘beserk’ at half-time

De Ligt was not the only one who was fuming at Brentford’s opener, with coach Darren Fletcher seen complaining in the tunnel.

As per Manchester Evening News, tunnel cam footage showed Fletcher going “beserk” at the fourth official as both sides headed to their dressing rooms.

Ten Hag also picked up a yellow card for his complaints, and he explained after the full-time whistle that his players were “angry” at the decision and used it as motivation for their second-half comeback.

De Ligt won the respect of fans by battling through his injury and putting on a fantastic display at centre-back alongside Jonny Evans.

Darren Fletcher could now face punishment

The angry reaction from United is completely understandable given what was at stake. Defeat against Brentford would have continued the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season and piled pressure back on Ten Hag after he avoided the sack last week.

Luckily Brentford’s controversial equaliser meant nothing in the end but it could have had huge implications.

However, The Mirror now report that Fletcher could face punishment for his half-time outburst.

They state that Fletcher could face an FA charge depending on whether the incident is included in referee Sam Barrott’s match report.

It is not the first time Fletcher has been angered by a decision after he stormed through the press box following Bruno Fernandes’ red card against Tottenham.
