Manchester United have been given a piece of good news following a dismal weekend.
The 3-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur featured a decision which threatened to cast a shadow over Manchester United’s next month.
Bruno Fernandes was sent off after a tackle on James Maddison, in a decision so bad that even former referee Dermot Gallagher questioned it, agreeing the United midfielder should not have received a red card.
Now there has been a piece of news which has given Manchester United a boost, with Fernandes’ red card wiped out.
Manchester United have managed to get Fernandes’ suspension overturned, with the FA agreeing the tackle was not worthy of a red card.

Manchester United figures fuming
Manchester United were putting in an awful performance against Tottenham, even prior to Fernandes’ red card.
According to iNews, the decision did not go down well with United’s senior figures, one in particular.
The paper reported: “United coach Darren Fletcher was incredulous as he stormed through the press box, with the club’s media team keen to point out, to all who would listen, just how poor a decision it was.”
And according to The Mail, Sir Dave Brailsford, Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox ‘were spotted in a huddle’, with it suggested they were discussing the legitimacy of the red card, as opposed to debating the manager’s future.
The frustration was clearly justified, and with good reason, with Fernandes’ red card now overturned.
Credit to United’s officials for managing to put the club’s case across effectively enough to get the Premier League to listen.
Ben Thornley verdict on ban overturn
Former Manchester United academy prospect Ben Thornley was asked about the decision from the Premier League, after it was overturned.
He told MUTV during coverage of the under-21 game: “Don’t get me started on that. I don’t understand how that decision couldn’t have been made at the time. That’s what baffles me.”
VAR official Peter Bankes made the choice to uphold the red card, despite having the multiple angles of the incident available to him.
Despite this clear error, the Premier League have announced Bankes will referee a Premier League game this weekend, taking change of Manchester City vs Fulham.
