Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana having second thoughts over big decision

Ever since Andre Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan for £43 million, the worry has been that the Cameroon international would be convinced to rejoin his national team.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper has, however, had a rather poor start to his career at Old Trafford and has conceded 18 goals in just 10 games for Manchester United.

A report from ESPN has stated that Andre Onana, who has seemingly made up with the national team coach Rigobert Song, is reluctant to join up with Cameroon during the winter for the Africa Cup of Nations.

He has meanwhile been called up into the squad for two friendly matches this month against Russia and Senegal.

Onana to commit to United

One risk with signing Onana was the looming international tournament that takes place in January but, according to the report, Onana told Erik ten Hag when he signed for the club that a return to the national side was not forthcoming.

He agreed to return for the final AFCON qualifier against Burundi in September amid pressure from the government and Cameroon FA.

After Cameroon won the game they qualified for the competition and that would mean Onana would miss up to a month of the season.

Onana, however, is having second thoughts about taking part because it could mean the 27-year-old missing a month of the Premier League season and FA Cup fixtures, and the player’s priority is reportedly to focus on his new club.

Onana demonstrates his commitment to the club

It’s fair to say United have been crying out for players who are dying to play for the Red Devils and Onana certainly fits the bill.

The 27-year-old’s commitment to improving at Old Trafford cannot be understated and the hope will be that Onana can improve at the club with the backing of supporters crucial for his confidence.

The argument could be made for Altay Bayindir to be given an opportunity in the side over the summer but with Onana willing to focus on United, the Turkish goalkeeper may well not receive the chance he is looking for.
